Unveiled at the beginning of the week, the Apple Magic TrackPad gives a large touchpad area for Macs, which up until now have only been used with the mouse. To better understand the magic behind it, the grand wizards at iFixit jumped on the Magic TrackPad as soon as they could, to take it apart!

80%! That's the difference between the size of trackpads on the MacBook Pro and this new wireless (Bluetooth) Magic Trackpad. The multi-touch possibilities are just as well exploited and it should be similar to use: excellent glide on a glass touch surface, clickable button across almost the whole surface, use of several fingers and so on. An attractive accessory for touch adapts, then, who want to replace their faithful mice.

The Magic Trackpad is, moreover, an optional addition when you buy the new 2010 iMac. It's available to buy separately on Apple Store site for £59.

The magic at the tip of a screwdriver

To find out what's behind this plain, innocent looking peripheral, the kings of teardown at iFixit decided to get their screwdrivers out. Inside, they found some well known components: the chip that controls the iPhone's touch screen, as well as the Magic Mouse's Bluetooth chip (the Magic Mouse has also been taken apart by iFixit). A good idea - it's always wise to stick with components that have proved their worth.

We don't want to give everything away on the teardown, however, as you can check out the surgical operations in detail at iFixit!
