Asus unveils 23'', 27'' 120 Hz 3D monitors

Asus has just announced plans for two new 120 Hz monitors that will be compatible with Nvidia's 3D technology.  The Taiwanese manufacture is the latest to join the party after Samsung kicked things off a year ago with its 2233rz, but it hasn't arrived empty-handed.

Amongst the monitors on offer, there's a Full HD 23'' display, the VG236H, and, for the first time, a 120 Hz 27'' monitor, the PG276H, which is also Full HD.  Up until now, the largest 120 Hz display we've seen was the 24'' Acer GD245HQ.

The launch of these new models aside, the arrival of a new player in what is still a very new market will certainly make some waves.

It should eventually lead to more competition, and while the size of the 3D screens is growing today, tomorrow it could be the turn of technology: we've already heard rumours of 120 Hz PVA displays, and why not a 120 Hz IPS?

Another welcome consequence of this announcement could be further encouragement for games developers: although the number of 3D compatible titles is growing every day, some little details like cursors could often do with refinement.  Faced with more and more 3D hardware, developers will have to make more of an effort to improve the performance of their software in 3D.

Apart from opening the door to 3D games and films, screens with a refresh rate of 120 Hz offer unbeaten responsiveness and fluidity.  At the moment, they're the best option for anybody who still hasn't left behind their trusty old CRT for gaming.

To get back to the two monitors themselves, Asus has yet to announce details of pricing or availability.
