Ballot screen arrives giving IE8 users choice over web browser

Starting from March 1, Windows 7 users have been welcomed by a new window inviting them to choose a new web brewer.  Five are on offer: Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Internet Explorer 8, listed in a random order.

The ballot screen itself looks like this:

As you can see, IE8 isn't first, and it doesn't get any more space than any of its four rivals.

This ballot screen, which has come about as a result of agreements between Microsoft and the European Commission about the American software giant's antitrust cases, will only appear in Europe.  To see it, you'll also need to already be running Internet Explorer as your default browser, and install an 'important update' via Windows Update.

If we look at our own stats, only a fifth of you are likely to come across this screen any time soon …
