Communication tool

The Pix-Star is ready-to-use right out of the box: everything is preconfigured. In order to use the frame as a communicating tool, you first have to register the product on the Web and choose your dedicated email address. Then you need to connect to your wireless network, via the type of encryption ("None", "WEP","WPA") and enter the KEY if there is encryption.

Once the connection is established, a wireless symbol will appear on the top right. The frame is ready to receive pictures from anyone who has the Pix-Star email address. A little envelope icon will appear when a picture is sent. If you want to send pictures, you can use the virtual keyboard and remote to type in the address; it will require a bit of patience but it works.

The Wi-Fi FotoConnect by Pix-star exists in 2 sizes: 8 and 10 inches and allows you to send and receive photos easily.

While other frames rely on memory cards and USB keys, this one allows you to recieve pictures directly from the Internet thanks to a dedicated email address. The same applies to sending pictures from your frame to other Pix-Star frames or to other email addresses. Moreover with a 2GB memory, you can store up to 10 000 pictures. Audio playback can accompany your slideshows. An external Bluetooth option is also available to transfer pictures from your phone.

Gap in design

Nothing much to report on a design that features black plastic and aluminum chrome plating. The display seems however to be floating within the frame. Dust and dirt will find this gap welcoming. We were not impressed by the build.

Viewing angles and picture quality

With a TN display, the Pixstar cannot avoid the problem of viewing angles. When sitting in front of it, you can see the pictures just okay, but from below, you will not. Image quality is average; photo reproduction is actually quite decent even though the colours are a bit too vibrant to be true. If you look at the pictures from very close, you will see some ghosting, but then again why would anyone want stick their face on a frame?

Your favourite MP3s can be played during a slideshow. It's a bit of a gimmick (the sound quality is rather poor) but many will enjoy this option.
