European Commission Considers Forcing Mobile Networks to Carry VoIP

The European Commission is said to be preparing a directive to force mobile phone networks to allow users to use VoIP services using their data networks.

Viviane Reding, the European Commissioner for Information, Society and Media, was lobbied by the Von (Voice on the Net) group after T-Mobile decided to ban iPhone customers from using Skype on its 3G network.

Having invested heavily in the traditional cellular network, operators are naturally afraid that an increasing use of VoIP will reduce their ability to charge per the minute for voice calls.
