Retrospect Express

Iomega delivers back-up software with the eGo. It gives you a complete back-up of your computer in case of data loss. Backing up is fine but you must update the back-ups on a regular basis. This is why Retrospect Express includes an automatic safeguard programme that activates back-ups hourly and daily. In case of loss or theft of the external hard drive, Iomega have also included data encrytion with password protection. Although this solution is pretty thorough, other manufacturers offer additional options such as back-up of mails and favourite web-pages.
In parallel to Iomega’s eGo series you also have the Prestige Portable available in 500 GB, 320 GB and 120 GB versions. Its brushed aluminium shell gives a nice finish.
In terms of connections however, once again, this device only has USB 2.0 connectivity. This is fine for small transfers but anything above 10 GB and you start to feel the lack of eSATA.
Like the eGo series, the Prestige Portable has an anti-shock system that protects against falls of up to 1.3 metres. This may be why it’s larger than competition models.
Lower than average speeds, especially for writes

USB speeds in MB/s
While its name suggests that the Prestige should give high performance, the tests show that speeds, especially writes, are a notch under average. It takes 47 seconds to write 1 GB of data onto the Prestige Portable and 33 seconds to retrieve it.
