IFA 2010: Toshiba's Cell TV Becomes CEVO

Toshiba finally unveiled the first finished television to use its super-powerful Cell processor on its stand at the IFA.

It's no longer called Cell TV, though, but CEVO, a contraction of Cell Evolution.  The ultra-connected, ultra-fast, ultra-smooth, ultra-just about everything TV from Toshiba was visible on the manufacturer's stand in what promises to be the final version for the European market.  While Japanese consumers are already enjoying gigabytes and gigabytes of internal memory, eight separate HD channels at once or a mosaic of forty simultaneous SD feeds, that's not, apparently, what Western viewers are looking for.



Toshiba has instead found some other magic tricks for its CELL processor.  The new TV has a 55'' panel, and its Full LED backlighting uses 512 zones, instead of the usual 128.  The photo below, taken at IFA, shows the individual zones.  It also includes support for active 3D, with the new processor taking care of 2D to 3D conversion.  Apps are available from the in-house Toshiba Places service.



It's the first TV to include this service, which will be also be available soon as an external unit to connect to your TV and home network.  As a symbol of just how seriously Toshiba is taking the market for televisions, even the exterior has been given a facelift by well-known Swedish designer Jacob Jensen.  The CEVO should be available in the first quarter of 2011 for close to £5000.
