Although it varies from one monitor to the text, TN technology results in a certain amount of clouding in dark areas. The Acer H243HX is amongst the monitors that are least subject to this defect. It’s not perfect, however. The more demanding viewer will prefer a monitor with a VA panel for better results screening films

To give you built-in sound, the manufacturer has included a pair of 1 W speakers. As you might expect, the audio quality they deliver is far from good. To hear anything, you have to push the volume to the maximum. We feel you should consider using them only as a backup, and plan on acquiring a 2.0 or 2.1 kit, which wouldn’t be a luxury.

Acer marks its return to DigitalVersus with the H243HX, a 24'' monitor. It has a 2 ms TN panel in 16:9 format with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Handling: HDMI + DVI + VGA + 2 port USB hub + webcam

Image from the H243HX’s webcam: the image quality is good,
but the built-in microphone makes voices sound metallic and lacks sensitivity.

Aside from its non-swivelling base, this monitor is fully equipped. On the back are HDMI, DVI, and VGA connectors and a two port USB hub that also serves to power the webcam located on the front panel. So it’s possible to connect any type of video source – a computer, a Blu-ray player, or a recent games console – and peripheral (mouse and keyboard). The shell is basic but nice to look at. As is often the case, it uses gloss black plastic on the front and matte plastic at the rear.

Colours: turn the brightness down

By default, the H243HX’s colours are accurate, but we do advise you lower the brightness slightly. On a palette of 18 colour, the deltaE, or average difference between the colours requested by the graphics card and those actually displayed by the monitor, didn’t go above 2.1. At that level, the colourimetry isn’t what’s at issue for photo editing, but rather the technology of the LCD panel. As you can see in the photo above, the display is far from even: the image is much darker at the top. A monitor with a VA panel, like the Samsung F2380M, would be better suited for that type of use.

This monitor’s contrast is above average. At 200 cd/m², its black level was at 0.21 cd/m², for a contrast rate of 950:1.

Responsiveness: very little ghosting

Average ghosting over ten frames

Acer has made a big comeback with the H243HX. As its specs promise, the panel is very responsive. It can’t quite match a 2 ms, 120 Hz TN panel in that department, but the performance is more than enough to make gamers happy.

In addition to its good reactivity, the input lag is short enough compared to a CRT monitor. With an average lag of 0.5 frames, users won’t have any problems during LAN parties.
Pluses

-

Very responsive

-

Accurate colours by default

-

Above average contrast –950:1

-

Built-in USB hub

-

Built-in webcam

Minuses

-

TN panel, so poor vertical viewing angles

-

Built-in microphone has metallic sound and poor sensitivity

The H243HX has good design, excellent reactivity and accurate colours with the factory adjustment. Only demanding photographers would have problems with the TN technology due to a lack of colour homogeneity.
