Not So Multi Media

There's a USB port at the back of this monitor—though it probably would have been better on the side—which is connected to a multimedia player. It's rather unusual, though, in that it can only open JPEG photos and MP3 music but no video formats.
A year after the M2794D, LG has launched another 27'' monitor with a Freeview HD tuner, the M2762D-PC, which aims to be as good a monitor as it is a TV. A screen this size is more than big enough to enjoy a film, but it will also be easier to spot any problems with upscaling, so we're hoping LG has paid careful attention to that.
Hardware: plenty of video inputsAs with all hybrid monitor-TVs, this score is heavily weighted in favour of the inputs and outputs on offer. At the moment, none of the models we've seen in this rather unique category has a stand that allows anything more advanced than tilting the screen back by a few degrees. The M2762D-PC is no exception to this rule.

LG has, however, really gone to town with the inputs and outputs. Alongside the usual pairing of VGA and DVI ports, there are also two HDMI ports and two SCART inputs, as well as both composite and component video. That means you'll have no problem hooking up a Blu-ray player, a games console, two computers, a VCR and an older DVD player—all at the same time! Your ears will have to make do with the pair of 2 x 5 W speakers, or you can use the optical audio out to redirect sound to another device.
Responsiveness: not great for 3 ms| Average ghosting over 10 frames |

From reading the documentation, we were hoping to find a more responsive hybrid than some of those currently available. Unfortunately, though , the M2762D-PC didn't deliver its quoted response time of 3 ms and isn't actually any faster than the others. According to our test results, there's nothing between it and a 'traditional' 5 ms TN panel. That means you'll have to go easy on games that need a lot of fast movements (Call of Duty, Far Cry 2 ...), unless, of course, you don't mind the blurry results.
Accurate colours ... almostLike with the M2380DF, we advise against connecting a PC to this 27'' monitor using the HDMI port, unless you're looking for an appalling display, with sharpness turned up too much and very odd colours. We recommend you use a DVI cable instead, which produces much better results.

| Ideal Colours Compare the LG Flatron M2762D-PC to other monitors in our Product Face-Off |
Set up this way, the colours on the M2762D-PC could almost be described as accurate. As a general rule, a deltaE of below 3.0 is needed for a screen to have accurate colours, and this monitor comes in at exactly that level. This score, incidentally, is a measure of the average discrepancy between the colours requested by the graphics card and those shown on screen.

We've nothing to add on the contrast: at 1050:1, the M2762D really has nothing to fear. Indeed, we'd be delighted if all monitors did this well ...
Movies: could do better
If you've got a video source on hand, then don't hesitate to plump for the HDMI port. Once it's plugged in, all you need to do is switch the colours from Lively to Cinema mode to be guaranteed the best results from this 27''.

Be careful though, because even in this configuration, the colours aren't reproduced perfectly or accurately. The deltaE is 3.9, and there's no way of improving it with a calibration profile.
The second big problem is the quality of the upscaling, because video that looks reasonable at 23'' isn't necessarily acceptable on a larger 27'' display. You should put a good two metres between you and the screen if you're watching an SD movie. We also noticed that the noise reduction filter is pretty ineffective: turning it on doesn't have a very noticeable effect. LG can thank its lucky stars that clouding is reasonably well contained as it is without having to resort to this feature.
Pluses
-
HD TV Tuner
-
Above average contrast
-
Lots of video inputs
-
Accurate (or almost accurate) colours over DVI
-
Media player
Minuses
-
Not as responsive as claimed
-
TN panel, so poor vertical viewing angles
-
Colours aren't accurate over HDMI
Because there are so few dipslays this big, the M2762D-PC can reasonably claim to be one of the best monitor-TV hybrid. That said, there's still plenty of room for development from the competition.
