LG TVs in our Lab: LED LE8900 and Plasma PK790

We've given up counting the number of e-mails we revive asking when we're going to test LG's new TVs.  Well, we've got some good news for you: two of them just arrived in our lab.  One of them, the LE8900, uses Full LED technology while the other, the PK760, is a plasma.

The LE8900 uses Full LED backlighting which leaves a TV that's only 3.5 cm thick.  It comes in three sizes, 42'', 47'' and 55''.  Other features include:

  • TruMotion 200 Hz to limit jerkiness in 24 fps films
  • Media Box: video sources are sent wirelessly from an external device which is connected to your TV aerial and other sources like your games console or Blu-ray disc player)
  • Online services (VOD, YouTube ...) and DLNA
  • WiFi available via an optional USB adaptor
  • Multimedia player can access external stooge devices
  • Thickness: 3.5 cm
  • Four HDMI ports
  • THX certified

The second TV, the PK790, uses plasma technology and is available in just two sizes, 50'' and 60''.  The former has the advantage of coming in at under £800, but still looks great and has a very interesting range of features:


  • 600 Hz mode with 24p Real Cinema
  • Online services (VOD, YouTube ...) and DLNA
  • WiFi available via an optional USB adaptor
  • Multimedia player can access content on external stooge devices
  • Thickness: 5.3 cm
  • Four HDMI ports
  • THX certified
