We were stunned last week to hear from AU Optronics that it's planning on developing FED-based displays to rival the OLED displays of the future. And AUO has been in touch to explain its plans in a little more detail. We were wondering just what sort of products would be targeted: TVs and monitors, or smaller displays for smartphones and satnav systesms? AUO's spokesman has told us that they will start with 26'' displays, meaning computer monitors.
AUO also told us that fully working products--display panels with all the electronics to go with them--were made available to several manufacturers as long ago as 2008. That means it's been over a year, and almost two, that some brands have been working on the technology. We still don't when the first finished products will be available.
AUO has promised to provide answers to all other questions soon. We'll let you know more as soon as we do ...
