Pentax Camera Updates: New Firmware for H90, I-10, W90 and X90

Pentax has just announced a series of updates for its compact cameras, with new firmware for the H90, I-10, W90 and X90.  That means these changes cover almost all of its current range, with only the entry-level E90 and M90 remaining unaffected.

The manufacturer usually keeps the firmware of its SLRs up to date, often adding new features along the way, but it hasn't always been as generous to the owners of its compact cameras: the last upgrade for them was for the E30, S7 and A20 back in March 2007.

With this new release, the H90, I-10, W90 and X90 are all now at version 1.01, which adds more support for Eye-Fi memory cards.  You no longer lose your settings when you turn the camera off, and you can keep on transferring photos even when the battery indicator shows yellow.

There is one interesting point though.  Pentax's support site says that any memory cards that '... have been used on other devices ... must first be formatted on this camera. Note that formatting a card erases all the data.'  We don't have any of these cameras to hand right now, so we haven't been able to check that yet, but if it is indeed the case then it could be very annoying for anybody with several cameras and several memory cards to juggle.

All of the updates are available from the Pentax download site.
