Reader Question: Why so few 2D TV tests?

One of our readers recently dropped us a line to ask why we seem to be prioritising 3D TVs in the product tests on DigitalVersus over regular 2D TVs. Let me explain.

Recent tests of 2D TVs include the Toshiba Regza 37RV675D, a well-kitted-out, budget, Full HD TV published just yesterday, and the Regza 42ZV625D published last week. Apart from that, it’s true that we haven’t published any other tests of 2D TVs from manufacturers’ 2010 ranges.

First of all, it’s true that we’re very interested in the new technology and the new experience promised by 3D television. Testing new technology also encourages us to create new tests and measurement systems. At DigitalVersus, we’ve always got an eye out for new technology as that’s what we’re interested in, and there’s no denying that. However, it’s not for want of trying that we haven’t tested this year’s 2D TVs, as no manufacturer has yet made them available to test!

In fact, it’s only now that we’re starting to receive the first 2D TVs from 2010 ranges. We got a 32-inch Panasonic 2D TV just the other day together with a 3D model. Televisions from Sharp and Loewe should be arriving soon too.

We’re really looking forward to getting our hands on 2D TVs from Samsung, LG and Sony, but as yet, we have no delivery dates for these manufacturers’ products, in spite of our relentless pestering!
