If a source over at Engadget is to be believed, Apple's iPhone could soon have a real rival, especially for mobile gaming, as Sony Ericsson is said to be developing a PSP phone.

Basically, the PSP phone would be a kind of hybrid mix between the PSP Go and the Samsung Captivate, running on Android 3.0. It's said to have a screen of between 3.7" and 4.1" with a maximum resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, and there's word of a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor. For practical gaming, the PSP phone won't rely on touchscreen controls like the iPhone, but will reportedly feature a slide-out controller, similar to the slide-out physical keyboards found in many models of smartphone.

On top of that, Android Market Place would apparently open a new games store stocked with titles boasting the same quality graphics as regular PSP games, making them more impressive than anything available for the iPhone or Nintentdo DS.

Some concrete information from the manufacturer should be one its way soon, as word on the web is that release is due for October this year. And if gaming on the PSP phone really is as impressive as on the PSP, it could well be curtains for handheld games consoles as we know them!
