GPS manufacturers continue to make progress, and in recent years we've enjoyed ever more accurate maps, with more detailed content, extra connectivity--and, of course, bigger devices.  TomTom has taken the logical next step with its new XXL IQ Routes, which has a 5'' screen, or 12.7 cm from one corner to the other.

Currently, the average size for new GPS devices is 4.3'', so the new TomTom XXL IQ Routes should offer improved visibility, and something closer to the built-in systems provided by some vehicle manufacturers.  The real advantage of a separate device, though, is that you can use it in more than one car.  It's also easier to update than a built-in sat-nav (and the updates themselves are generally cheaper).  Interacting with a 5'' screen should be a lot easier too, with large icons on the touchscreen display.  And of course, the fewer errors you make while typing the address, the faster you'll be able to find out how to get there.

We've already tested the TomTom IQ Routes.  The XXL version is identical, but comes with maps for all of Europe--and a much bigger, display, of course.  We found it to be a straightforward, reliable solution, and something that we'd recommend for people who don't need too many advanced features (the LIVE range is a better choice if you do) but who still need something that's easy-to-use without breaking the bank.  If a 4.3'' screen is enough for you, there's also a European edition of the TomTom XL IQ Routes.

There are even bigger devices out there though, with screens right up to 7'': one example is the Mio Moov Spirit V735 TV, and as the name suggests, it also includes a television tuner.
