Although the upcoming Nintendo 3DS might be the first widely-available 3D device that won't need glasses, another Japanese manufacturer is set to be the first to release a 3D TV which won't require viewers to don any special equipment.

According to a story from the AFP picked up yesterday by Engadget, Toshiba has plans to release three different 3D TVs before Christmas at a cost of 'several thousand' dollars'.

Strained Eyes—And Budgets

Several manufacturers have now released TVs relying on active 3D technology, which requires viewers to wear special glasses that alternate between covering each eye up to 120 times a second.  However, some early adopters have complained of headaches and eye strain—not to mention the extra costs associated with equipping the whole family with a pricey pair of glasses.  Despite the extra premium that manufacturers can charge for 3D TVs, they usually don't come with 3D glasses.

So far, Toshiba has refused to comment on the rumours that it's planning to launch its glasses-free 3D TVs by Christmas.
