Lots of you have been waiting for us to test Sony's latest TVs.  The first one out of the box was from the entry-level Bravia Essential series, the KDL-40EX503.  It's a 100 Hz LCD with Bravia Engine 3.

The Essential EX503 TVs come at the start of Sony's range, but that doesn't mean they can't compete with some of the best of the bunch.  To stand up to the big boys, it comes with 100 Hz Motionflow and access to online services which are available over WiFi if you add a wireless USB adaptor.  The EX503 supports the DLNA standard and can play HD video from an external hard drive, again using its USB port.

At first sight, this seems to be an affordable television that can rival the enormously successful Sony Bravia WE5, which came away with our top score of five stars when we tested it.  Is the new Essential family a worthy successor?
