The iOS 4.0.1 software update Apple is hoping will correct the iPhone's reception display issues is now available to download from the company's website.

Apple claims the iOS4 update will improve 'the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display'. Let's hope so!

The update is compatible with the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

The new OS update is available to download now, but it's a whopper at almost 600 MB. You'll also need iTunes 9.2.

Apple has also released an operating system update for the iPad (iOS 3.2.1) which promises to:
  • improve Wi-Fi connectivity,
  • correct the PDF copy/paste bug,
  • correct the video playback freeze bug,
  • improve video output reliability when using the iPad Dock Connector to VGA adapter,
  • add Bing as an option in the Safari search field.

Note that iOS 4 for iPad should be released at the end of the year.
