Running costs

With 1700 W measured in the test for the VC9083CL (same spec) it'll cost you a pound for every 4 hours 30 minutes of use, instead of between 7 and 8 hours with an economical 1300 W model.

Using the Compressor is equivalent to turning on and viewing 14 46'' TVs.

The Compressors are bagless vacuums that claim to compress dust down into a lump. LG's theory is that many users are disappointed with their bagless machines because:
  • they are a good deal noisier than those with bags (here the Compressor does better than the Dyson),
  • emptying the bin too often provokes a cloud of dust that gets everywhere.
The Compressor offers a magic solution: it forms a block of dust in the bottom of the bin. No more dust flying everywhere when you empty it! Quite a selling point.

As we mentioned in our test for the VK9820NHB, only the 2000 W range is available in the UK and includes two models, the NHB and this VK9820UHR. They have different sized bins: 1.2 litres for the VK920NHB and 2.2 for the VK9820UHR. Both have a Hepa filter and a range of 12 metres and noise levels are slightly lower than on the Dyson range.

What's different on the VK9820UHR
?

As we said above the VK9820NHB has a smaller bin than the UHR and this makes the UHR better for larger areas. The UHR also has more additional accessories:
  • the turbo-combi nozzle for cleaning carpet tile and deep pile.
  • a matress brush for really getting into the dust, dust mites or other allergenic substances (hairs etc) that get into your mattress or furnishings.

The last plus point on the UHR: it is, according to LG, slightly quieter than the NHB. 76 dB (we measured 75 dB) against 78. For the rest everything else is identical between the two cleaners. We therefore refer you to the test for the LG VK9820NHB for further details.
Pluses

-

Good overall suction across all surfaces

-

Good range: 12 meters

-

It compresses dust into lumps

-

A 2.2 litre bin

Minuses

-

Given at 2000 watts: not the most economical or efficient

-

Dust gets everywhere, too much maintenance

-

Noisier exist, but so do quieter

-

We'd like more robust and mobile parts

-

Less effective on carpet tile and deep pile than on hard surfaces

The two additional brushes, for mattresses and carpet, will interest those who want to get rid of dust mites and other allergenic substances. The problem of dust which gets into all parts of the machine is still there (foam filter, hepa filter, joints). It's a shame, as suction is effective and the dust lump was a good idea.
