We're not quite there yet, thankfully for Dell's founder. However around 25% of Dell shareholders withheld support at a recent shareholders meeting.

The New York Times, quoting Joseph A. Grundfest, a Stanford law professor, states that this level of shareholder disaffection with respect to such a central company figure is extremely rare. So what's the cause of it? It comes after a payment of USD 100mn by the company to settle charges of accounting fraud leveled by the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission). Michael Dell also paid a USD 4mn personal penalty as part of the same inquiry although without admitting any wrongdoing.

Other cases in the past

Ask Jerry Yang, co-founder of Yahoo! what he thinks. He stepped down from his post as CEO in January 2009 following the Carl Icahan / Microsoft affair, but is still on Yahoo!'s board in an honorary position. Steve Jobs also resigned in 1985 before returning in 1997 as head of Apple.
